Are you looking for ways to spruce up your day and spend your time wisely? For seniors, the days of engaging in high-impact activities are likely over, but that doesn’t mean you should be a couch potato. There are plenty of low-impact activities to get the blood flowing, burn some much-need calories, and stay in better shape as senior.

If you’re enjoying your retirement, then you most likely have more free time on your hands than before. While this can be a shock at first if you worked your whole life, it’s also an opportunity. At first, you might feel lost, but in reality, you have freshly acquired free time to pick up new hobbies you might not have realized are your true passion.

To get your wheels spinning, there are five great activities for seniors listed below. Give yourself a chance to get acquainted with them all to decide whether they’re right for you.

    1) Kayaking

An excellent way to get out there to get some exercise while enjoying being outdoors is good ol’ fashioned kayaking. Not only is kayaking a low-impact activity, but it’s a great way to get some fresh air each day and discover new places in the wilderness.

A great way to get the ball rolling is to invest in a good inflatable kayak for seniors. The main advantage of choosing an inflatable kayak is that it should only weighs about 20 to 30 lbs. Because of this, seniors can easily pack it and move it to the water.

When selecting a kayak be sure to consider how turbulent the waters you plan to use your kayak on will be because some models feature internal aluminum ribs while other models do not. For example, if you plan to use your kayak in the ocean, then it’s better to choose a model with ribs.

    2) Pickleball

Have you ever heard of pickleball? It’s a sport that people of all ages can enjoy. Think of it as playing ping pong on a tennis court. To get started with pickleball, all you really need is a place to play and your own paddle, making it a very small upfront investment to get started.

To find a place to play, it’s easy by searching on places2play.org. Simply enter your zip code, and the search results will guide you to the nearest courts. Plus, there’s additional info on lessons, playing times, number of courts, etc. You’ll even find reviews by current players.

Overall, pickleball is a great sport for seniors who want to stay active, meet new people, and pick up a new sport that’s as charming as it is fun.

    3) Bachata

Have you ever considered learning how to dance? It’s never too late to get started, and you’ll be the star of any gathering when you learn bachata. If you’re unfamiliar with bachata, it’s a type of dance that’s common in Latin America, especially in the Caribbean. Just imagine being able to dance bachata and strut your stuff on your next Caribbean vacation.

The beauty of bachata is that it’s not very demanding on your joints, and it’s a very sensual type of dance. Once you learn the moves, you’ll be able to have a romantic night out with your significant other or teach your other loved ones your new moves.

Additionally, bachata is the perfect complement to salsa, so if either type of dance interests you, it’s a good decision to get acquainted with bachata.

    4) Dog Walking

Is there a local animal shelter near you? Chances are if the answer is yes, then the shelter will be more than happy to welcome you to spend some quality time with the dogs there. Part of that quality time is undoubtedly taking the dogs for a walk to get both you and the dogs some good exercise.

Who knows, you might even find a new friend to bring home. Then, all the inspiration you’ll need to get outside for a walk each day will be waiting for you each morning when you wake up. Because after all, they don’t call dogs “man’s best friend” for nothing.

    5) Birding or Birdwatching

One of the world’s greatest hobbies is birdwatching or birding. There’s no limit to what you can do when you take up birdwatching as your new hobby. The possibilities are endless since you can go just about anywhere in the great outdoors to track and discover new birds.

In the process, you’ll get exercise through hiking while taking in the fresh air. To get started, all you need is a decent pair of binoculars. Good brands to check out include Vortex, Leupold, and Nikon to name a few. Depending on your budget, you might want to graduate to Swarovski once you have some experience under your belt.

The best way to start is with the help of the National Park Service’s “Birding for Beginners” guide. The guide has all the information you need to get started along with a full map of locations that are great for birding across the country.

    Final Thoughts

All five of these activities are great for seniors. They’ll help you to stay in shape, stay motivated to get outside more often, and put a smile on your face. By picking up at least one of these activities, you have no excuse to stay inside all day.

The important part is to assess your current fitness level to identify which activities suit you the best. If you had previous injuries, then it’s easy to choose which activities won’t put unnecessary stress on the parts of your body that are best left alone. Which activity will you choose first?
