5 Benefits of an Orthopedic Surgeon

Orthopedic doctors are experts in all things bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons, collectively known as the musculoskeletal system. They treat people of all ages and deal with congenital disorders (a disorder someone is born with such as spina bifida) and conditions caused by accidents such as a sports injury or a broken hip. This article is going to explain 5 benefits of an orthopedic surgeon that everyone should know!

    1. They Help Prevent Injury

These talented Doctors are more commonly visited by someone already bearing an injury, but sometimes they are approached by someone, usually an athlete or sportsperson, seeking advice on how to prevent injury. In this scenario, the physician will educate the client and create an injury prevention programme. This programme will include many different stretches and warm-up exercises, as well as advice on wearing protective gear such as mouth guards, shoulder pads and correct footwear.

    2. They Reduce or Eliminate Pain

The relief or elimination of pain is a more common reason that people visit an orthopaedic surgeon. Chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than 12 weeks) and acute pain are treated slightly differently. Acute pain therapy focuses on the underlying cause and blocks the nociceptive signals (signals that are sent to the central nervous system as a result of trauma or stimulation). A multidisciplinary strategy and multiple therapeutic modalities such, as laser therapy or electrical stimulation, must be used in the treatment of chronic pain.

    3. They Help Improve Mobility and Function

This is especially important following an operation. Patients must follow a recovery plan after an operation to regain normal mobility and function. If this isn’t carefully planned and executed, the patient may experience consistent pain and the area will not heal correctly. Professional orthopedic care is the best way to ensure the most efficient and quick recovery, added Dr. Brian Cable. Dr. Brian Cable is passionate about family and a single father of three. He is learning guitar and is a proponent of volunteering and serving his community. He is the 1996 recipient of the Association of Bone & Join Surgeons: Marshall R. Urist Resident Award and holds a medical license in both Pennsylvania and California. Dr. Cable performed his orthopedic surgery residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center.

    4. They Improve Blood Circulation

When undergoing surgery, your orthopedic surgeon is with you from the very beginning until long after the surgery, and monitoring a patient’s blood flow post-op is one of many crucial steps to follow. Blood flow is especially restricted in the legs after an operation. These physicians will implement physical therapy that includes calf and foot exercises, they will recommend compression socks and they also may use a device called intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC). IPC wraps around the leg to prevent blood clots by gently squeezing and applying pressure.

    5. These Doctors are by your side from the beginning to Long after the Operation!

From the minute you experience pain, an orthopedic surgeon is there to guide you to recovery. They will talk you through your operation and answer any questions you may have, to make you feel confident and trusting towards your surgeon. These doctors have excellent bedside manners to ensure their patients are content. Following the operation, they will consult with their patients and implement a reliable recovery plan.

Orthopedic Surgeons are the backbone of health (pun intended)! The musculoskeletal system is a very large and crucial system in our body that we must look after!
