The most outstanding aesthetic feature of the face besides the eyes is your nose. An irregularly shaped nose can make you feel uneasy. But not anymore.
Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) can correct or reshape undesirable features, such as the bridge or tip, restoring the balance with other facial features. However, it’s important to understand possible changes, limitations, and risks regardless of whether you are doing it for cosmetic or other health reasons.
Rhinoplasty is a personalized surgery involving a consultation with the surgeon to verify the desired look and breathing assessment.
As your surgeon guides you on the procedure, there are some basic considerations to note. These include:
- Age of the patient or client
- Ethnic background
- Skin type
Who Qualifies for Rhinoplasty?
A nose job in Long Island and other areas is for patients in good health and without pre-existing medical conditions. But as a general standard, your nose should be fully developed and in adult size. This is usually after the age of 14 to 15 for girls and 15 for boys.
Not everyone who dislikes their nose appearance is a candidate for rhinoplasty. Please consult with your plastic surgeon to determine if the procedure is right for you.
How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Typically, there are two techniques involved: open or closed rhinoplasty.
Your anatomy and the expected alterations will determine which technique is more appropriate for you.
Open Rhinoplasty
In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the skin between your two nostrils to lift the skin, giving them full visualization of the nasal structure. This is chosen for more complex rhinoplasty cases. This type takes longer to heal and results in an external scar; however, the scar is relatively tiny and fades quickly.
Closed Rhinoplasty
The surgeon makes an incision inside the nostrils under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. It does not require an external incision and is much shorter than the open procedure. This technique is chosen for less complex cases, such as nasal humps and bumps.
Correcting a Deviated Septum Through Rhinoplasty
A licensed surgeon understands the careful evaluation needed when rhinoplasty is required to improve an obstructed airway. A nose job is not always about facial appearance. Rhinoplasty is also the proper procedure to correct or straighten a deviated septum for enhanced breathing. It is achieved by better alignment of the nasal structure through surgical adjustment.
Is Nose Surgery Right for You?
Rhinoplasty helps to improve your self-image and any self-consciousness. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, but there are many other medical reasons for having nose surgery. The most common complications stem from a recurring sinus infection, a broken nose or birth deformity, and major snoring problems.
You will usually wear a nasal splint as directed by your surgeon. Also, expect a little swelling that probably only you and your surgeon will notice.
Eventually, after healing, your desired nose shape will be noticeable.
