I’m a sucker for mind-blowing movies with twists, turns, and unpredictable endings. When Inception was released in 2010, I was completely enamored by Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece and ability to take the concept of dreams and use it to manipulate minds.
Nolan’s specialty is working on movies that make you think, and Inception is no different. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Elliot Page, Inception is a mind bending movie that kind of makes you wonder, “What actually happened?”
At least that’s what I thought the first time around, as corporate espionage through dreams is not exactly something that happens in real life. But once you watch it a few times, you start to get it. Leo’s role as Dominick Cobb is to steal information by hacking into people’s subconscious. Cobb is offered the chance to have his criminal history erased if he is able to implant an idea from someone else’s mind into that of his target.
It all sounds incredibly confusing and a little insane, but there are plenty of other movies like it. Ever heard of the complicated movie Shutter Island? That’s another film starring Leonardo DiCaprio that keeps you guessing throughout. A top rated movie from the same year, Shutter Island leaves you with a perplexed feeling but isn’t a film that should be overlooked.
As someone who really loves watching movies, especially ones that keep me at the edge of my seat, I can’t help but share this list of 10 Mind Blowing Movies Like Inception. Now that I’ve gotten my Inception obsession out of my system, I’d like to go on about another one of my favorite film genres: post-apocalyptic movies. I know that my nerdiness is showing the more I dive into my film tastes, but there’s something I really love about disaster movies. At least now in 2021 my interest in these films are relatable in the real world.
When thinking about the current state of affairs, I am Legend immediately comes to mind. A zombie movie starring Will Smith, scientist Robert Neville is the last person on earth after a deadly and incurable manmade virus wiped out the population. Sound familiar? Even more eerie is that the movie takes place in New York City, the once-epicenter of the novel coronavirus.
As dismal as it is, the challenging and alternative reality offered by post-apocalyptic movies provides us all the comfort that we’re not all living in a complete wasteland. Take the 2009 movie, The Road, for example. Based on the 2006 novel by Cormac McCarthy, The Road follows the journey of a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his boy (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as they travel through a scorched and barren United States looking for refuge.
If all of these movies feel a little hardcore, then get your feet wet with the 2012 film adaptation of The Hunger Games. Based on the novel by Suzanne Collins, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers to take part in the Hunger Games in place of her sister. The games feature a selected person from each of the 12 districts of Panem, where the objective is fight to the death. Though it sounds just as bleak as some of the other movies, there’s a reason it was so popular; The Hunger Games transcends more than just fans of dystopian novels, and I can assure you the movie does the same.

Though I wasn’t one to believe that the world ended in 2012 or that we can simply steal ideas from other people by putting them in a dream-like state, I am drawn to these kinds of movies.
