The facade is an essential aspect of a building, both visually and functionally. It is one of the most significant aspects of a building, along with the roof, because it works as the major barrier against exterior weather factors that could harm the structure’s health, such as rain, snow, wind, frosts, sun, and so on.

An architect’s project portfolio has numerous façade systems and materials. So, here in this article, we explore some of the major types of facade systems that are common in modern buildings.

    What are Facade Systems?

In the past, the building’s facade was a structural component. Today’s facades are non-load-bearing structural elements made up of various façade systems. These features protect the structure from the weather, provide temperature and fire protection, and affect the building’s outside appearance. They also give lateral and vertical wind resistance.

    Types of Facade Systems

The sort of façade system used is mostly determined by the type of structure, the scale of construction, and desired aesthetic. The following are some examples of current facade systems:

    • Light Steel Walling

In order to enclose the building and support the exterior cladding, this style of walling uses light steel C sections. These technologies assist reduce on-site material waste while accelerating the construction process. Also, they are made to be light and resilient against strong winds that are applied to the facade.

    • Curtain Walling Systems

Curtain walling is a sort of prefabricated panels that are directly affixed to the structure as lightweight metallic or glazed cladding. Panels can be delivered as interlocking components that are assembled on-site, or they can be pre-assembled, depending on the needs of the structure. Depending on the structural and aesthetic components of the facade, the panels’ size and shape will vary.

    • RainScreen Support Systems

Systems for supporting rain screens are made up of rail-backed panels that are held up by brackets fastened to supporting wall holders. The backing wall typically supports the insulation and may include an infill system. To accommodate different materials and design aesthetics, this kind of system provides a wide range of frame possibilities, assisting in the creation of the required aesthetic effects.

    • Stainless Steel Brackets & Brick slips

Modern structures often include brick facades that are joined to the building by steel support systems. For brickwork facades, there are two primary systems.

At the floor level, brickwork is supported by stainless steel brackets. They are fastened to the building’s slab edge or edge beams. On the other hand, using brick slips, the brickwork is supported by horizontal rails, sheets, or optionally, bonded to a sheathing board that also acts as insulation and waterproofing.

    Common Types of Facade Materials

Although a variety of materials are frequently employed in facade design. The appropriate material for your facade will depend on a number of criteria, including the location of your property. Aside from your own personal preferences, crucial qualities to consider include:

    ●   Durability.
    ●   Cost.
    ●   Noise Absorption.
    ●   Insulation.
    ●   Sustainability.
    ●   Contrast to Nearby Buildings.
The following materials are frequently used for building facades:
    ●   Metals like steel or aluminum ACP panels
    ●   Stone
    ●   Glass
    ●   Brick
    ●   Concrete
